Anne Carlsen Center
Study Abroad in Rome, Italy
- In May of this year, I was hired as a Direct Support Professional with the Bismarck Anne Carlsen Center to work with children diagnosed with Autism and in some cases other conditions. I mentor these children and work with them on their individual goals. Each child I work with is very different, having their own personalities, likes, dislikes and temperaments. I have learned so much about special education and this experience has allowed me to apply the learning techniques and strategies of what I've learned in my courses to actual students. I've also learned how important it actually is to build that strong rapport with my clients and the impact patience, guidance and flexibility can make on the growth of a child with special needs.
Study Abroad in Rome, Italy
- In the summer of 2015, I had the once in a lifetime experience to travel abroad in Rome, Italy for 5 weeks. Not only getting to travel through Rome, but Spain, Germany, Ireland and Florence has taught me about the different cultures this world has to offer. This was an experience that I will surely take into my classroom and teach my students about the types of people and cultures around the world and how each person adds a piece of the puzzle called life. This type of experience not only taught me a lot about myself but the values I have as a person.
- For the past 3 years, I have worked for the Missouri Recreational Educational Cooperative (MREC) after school program. The first year I worked at Fort Lincoln in Mandan and the last two years I have been at Dorothy Moses Elementary School. Working at Dorothy Moses, I have been exposed to much more cultural diversity than I would have expected. The students I have are of different backgrounds, such as Native American, Caucasian or African American. It was a learning experience for me when I helped my students deal with problems at home that I never have been exposed to previously. Being exposed to this diversity has made me a better teacher.
